Sunderland
History:
Sunderland is thought to be named after Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland. Spencer was a former Secretary of State for England. He arranged refuge for many German Palatine families who had fought for the British in various wars and were subsequently given land grants in Brock Township. The decsendants of these German Palatine families expressed their gratitude by naming their village in honour of the Earl of Sunderland. Sunderland was a sleepy rural hamlet prior to the arrival of the Toronto and Nipissing railway which opened a station in Sunderland in 1871. The station was decommissioned and demolished in 1969. Since the 1850s the annual Sunderland Fall Fair has been a fixture on the local calendar and a celebration of Sunderland’s agricultural roots as a community.
