Bowmanville
History:
Bowmanville was an attractive destination for pioneer settlers as it had rich soil for farming and a number of waterways for operating wheat, flour and saw mills which were essential in building up the community. The name Bowmanville is derived from Charles Bowman who was a prominent merchant and landowner. Bowman subdivided parcels of land as the community grew more prosperous. Bowmanville’s growth led to it being incorporated as a village in 1852 and soon after in 1858 it graduated to town status. Bowmanville remained a mostly rural community until the 1960s when Highway 401 was built ushering a new era of growth that has continued to this day.
