Woodlands
History:
The area now known as the Woodlands neighbourhood abuts the Rouge River Valley which was part of a vast ancestral hunting and fishing grounds for First Nations people. The present day Woodlands neighbourhood was developed in stages between 1940-2000.
Overview:
Woodlands is located in the southwest part of Pickering. This is a relatively small neighbourhood bounded by Sheppard Avenue to the north, Kingston Road to the south, Whites Road on the east and the South Petticoat Ravine on the east. Steeple Hill Park provides a nice greenspace in the centre of the neighbourhood. The Steeple Hill Shopping Centre is a popular neighbourhood shopping destination. There is also a plethora of shops and restaurants to choose from along Kingston Road. Woodlands is a popular choice for commuters as the Whites Road highway 401 interchange is easily accessed just south of this neighbourhood.
Lifestyle:
Steeple Hill Shopping Centre located at 650 Kingston Road includes a FreshCo supermarket, a Shoppers Drug Mart, and Starbucks as well as beauty, health and professional services. There is a plethora of additional shopping options along Kingston Road including fast food restaurants, car dealerships, and a value village.
Homes:
Woodlands is a popular choice for first time buyers and young families, containing a nice mix of townhomes and modest detached homes with single and double car garages out front with private driveways. Most of these houses were built in the 1980s.
Recreation:
Steeple Hill Park is the largest park in this neighbourhood consisting of a children’s playground, as well as a walking path through a naturalized ravine valley. Nearby Rouge Park provides a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities.
Arts:
Durham West Arts Centre and the PineRidge Arts Council both promote arts events in Pickering including the annual Durham West Studio Tour. Esplanade Park adjacent to the Pickering Municipal Complex has a summer concert series hosted by the City of Pickering. Esplanade Park is also the site of the Pickering Farmers’ Market. In addition to a variety of farm fresh food this market also includes music and arts activities for families as well as a variety of artisans showing their work. The City also hosts a summer Waterfront Concert Series at Pickering’s Millennium Square.
The City of Pickering has an official Dance Company known as SynchroniCity that performs at the annual Easter Parade, Santa Claus Parade, Tree Lighting, Artfest and other community events.
