The Orchard
History:
The Orchard as its name implies was formerly a fruit orchard farm. The proprietors of this farm were the Dryden family after whom the main thoroughfare in this neighbourhood is named. The Dryden family maintained farming operations in the area right up until the 1990s when the present day neighbourhood was developed.
Overview:
The entrance to this neighbourhood off Appleby Line is a landscaped boulevard with a stone street marker with The Orchard name scrolled upon it. The street signs also proudly proclaim that you are now in The Orchard neighbourhood. Pride of ownership is evident throughout the neighbourhood which has a new urbanism feel with pedestrian friendly streets and traditionally designed houses with a whimsical charm. The streetscapes are lined with trees and follow the gentle undulations of the road forming pretty crescents and quiet cut-de-sacs. Most of the houses have front porches making for a close knit community. There are a number of parkettes and open ravine woodlots with paved pathways within this neighbourhood making it ideal for families. There is both a public and catholic school within walking distance of every home. Bronte Creek Provincial Park forms the eastern boundary of this neighbourhood adding to the tranquility of the area. The Orchard is situated on Burlington’s eastern boundary next to the Town Of Oakville.
Lifestyle:
Millcroft Shopping Centre located at 2000 Appleby Line is a quaint neighbourhood open air plaza with neatly arranged shops. Anchor tenants include Shoppers Drug Mart, and the LCBO.
Homes:
The majority of houses in The Orchard are detached with double car garages. There are also semi-detached homes with single car garages. The homes in this neighbourhood are either brick or clad in siding with traditional colour schemes for classic Colonial and Cape Cod designed houses. Most houses have a front porch and include whimsical architectural details such as front porches, dormers, and gables.
Recreation:
The Orchard Community Park is a neighbourhood hub and cherished community greenspace located off Sutton Drive. This park features a grass sports field, an artificial turf field, basketball court, playground with splashpad, trails, and open green space, as well as parking.
Arts:
The Art Gallery of Burlington is located at 1333 Lakeshore Road in the heart of Burlington’s downtown waterfront. This contemporary gallery is a multi-faceted centre that is the home base for 7 different artists guilds operating within the City of Burlington. The AGB also provides studio space for local artists, as well as hosting a myriad of exhibitions, lectures and events and running school programs. The AGB is especially known for its ceramic collection.
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is a city landmark and source of civic pride. This landmark centre occupies a high profile position in the downtown core at the corner of Locust and Elgin Streets. The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is comprised of two theatres; the larger Main Theatre has world-class acoustics and an orchestra pit. It is ideal for theatrical and musical performances and seats 718 people. The more intimate Community Theatre is ideal for smaller scale productions. It seats 225 people.
