Lakeside
History:
One of the earliest settlers to this area was Richard Carruthers after whom Carruthers Creek and Carruthers Marsh are named. Carruthers emigrated here in the 1850s from Cumberland, England. The Carruthers family continued to own land here right up until the 1940s.
The Lakeside subdivision was developed by Tribute Homes in the early 2000s.
Overview:
Lakeside is a large subdivision situated in the southeast pocket of Ajax on the shores of Lake Ontario. Lakeside has a new urbanism streetscape with traditional architecture, bicycle lanes, foot paths, neighbourhood parks and a community pavilion. This neighbourhood is surrounded by nature. Lake Ontario and Carruthers Marsh form the south boundary, while Warbler Marsh forms the north boundary, The Carruthers Creek valley is a beautiful green corridor that buffers the east and west side of the neighbourhood.
Homes:
Lakeside’s detached houses seem perfectly designed to reflect their waterfront setting. The exteriors are both welcoming and charming with large front porches and whimsical accents. Some homes also have a second floor balcony to take advantage of the waterfront vistas. These homes have brick or frame siding and each house has a built-in single or double car garage. There is also a smaller selection of townhouse enclaves within this neighbourhood.
Recreation:
There is a network of paved trails within this neighbourhood that provide residents the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings with wonderful vistas of Lake Ontario, Warbler Woods and Carruthers Creek Marsh. Carruthers Marsh Pavillion situated in Lakeside Park is a popular venue for social events and community celebrations and serves as a neighbourhood hub. Lakeside Park also has two children’s playgrounds, a splash pad and a paved trail overlooking the waterfront.
Arts:
WoodHaven is a public art sculpture garden located outside Caruthers Creek Pavillion. The four forged metal panels created by Mark Puigmarti, use whimsical stick figures to depict themes of adult and youth interaction, community and family, compassion and caring, and playfulness in the outdoors. The panels are configured to mirror each other with the negative space in the centre depicting a tree.
