Amberlea
History:
Amberlea was developed by Bramalea Consolidated Developments Limited. The first homes were built in 1975. In the first year of development 250 homes were built. The neighbourhood proved to be very popular resulting in many of the homes being pre-sold prior to construction. Families were attracted to the affordable price of the homes as well as the building of neighbourhood amenities including the Amberlea Shopping centre, schools and parks.
Overview:
Amberlea is a popular choice for families as it has multiple schools and parks and affordable homes. It also has a busy shopping plaza and is well served by Durham Transit. Whites Road is the main thoroughfare in Amberlea running from the north end of the neighbourhood just above Finch Avenue all the way south to the Whites Road Highway 401 on-ramp. The west side of this neighbourhood is bordered by Altona Forest a large protected greenspace that provides a myriad of opportunities for families to enjoy the outdoors.
Lifestyle:
Amberlea Shopping centre located off Whites Road is an open air plaza anchored by a Metro grocery store and a Rexall pharmacy. There are also professional services, a convenience store and restaurants.
Homes:
Amberlea housing stock was built in the 1970s and 1980s. The houses are modest in size and therefore affordable. There is a mix of detached, semi-detached and townhomes. Most of these houses have a single or double car garage in front of the house.
Recreation:
There are numerous parks and playgrounds in this neighbourhood. Amberlea Park located in the middle of the neighbourhood has a butterfly garden, children’s playground, splash pad and baseball diamond.
Altona Forest which forms the west boundary of this neighbourhood is an environmentally sensitive greenspace where more passive outdoor experiences are encouraged including: hiking, bird watching, wildlife photography and educational interpretative walks.
Arts:
Durham West Arts Centre and the PineRidge Arts Council both promote art events in Pickering including the annual Durham West Studio Tour. Esplanade Park adjacent to the Pickering Municipal Complex has a summer concert series hosted by the City of Pickering. Esplanade Park is also the site of the Pickering Farmer’s Market. In addition to a variety of farm fresh food this market also includes music and arts activities for families as well as a variety of artisans showing their work.
