Liverpool
History:
Liverpool was originally known as Liverpool Market, It was a small crossroads hamlet that was a stopover along the well travelled Kingston Road Highway. The focal point of the community was Liverpool Arms Inn, built in 1827. The Liverpool Arms Inn welcomed many a weary traveller heading from Kingston to Toronto. One of these guests was said to be Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister. A 1929 Liverpool Arms Inn advertisement promotes that they were serving beer and soft drinks and offering rooms from $1.00 per day and up. This ad also mentions that Toronto is just 14 miles east and that there are popular fishing holes nearby.
Liverpool Arms Inn has remarkably survived the urbanization that has taken place all round and to this day serves as a neighbourhood landmark situated at the northwest intersection of Kingston and Liverpool Roads where it now serves as a popular neighbourhood pub and restaurant called Liverpool John’s.
