Appleby
History:
Many of the first settlers hailed form Appleby in Westmoreland, England which is how this neighbourhood got its name. Appleby was a prosperous hamlet in the 1800s with many saw and grist mills operating along the creeks that traversed the neighbourhood. The community was large enough to warrant the opening of a post office in 1857. Almost one hundred years later Appleby had a school, church, hotel, local businesses and a community hall. The historic Appleby hamlet has been lost to the passage of time as development encroached on its doorstep however the present day neighbourhood developed in the 1950s and 60s, bares the name of its predecessor.
