Heart Lake
History:
This neighbourhood is named after the landmark Heart Lake Conservation Park that opened in 1957. Villages of Heart Lake was the first residential development in this neighbourhood. It was developed in the 1970s as a master planned community. There were twelve premier builders involved in this development that featured an astounding one hundred fully furnished model homes. Prices ranged from $47,000 up to $100,000. The second phase of development in the Heart Lake neighbourhood occurred in the early 2000s, when a number of new townhouse developments were built.
Overview:
Heart Lake is a picturesque neighbourhood situated in the northwest part of Brampton. The neighbourhood namesake is Heart Lake Conservation Park whose kettle lake is actually the shape of a heart. The first housing built in this neighbourhood where situated in the Villages of Heart Lake enclave centred at Kennedy Road and Sandalwood Parkway East. There is an abundance of greenspace in this neighbourhood. In addition to Heart Lake Conservation Park there is also Loafers Lake, Conservation Drive Park, and Sandalwood Park. Loafers Lake Lane is the site of the Loafers Lake Recreation Centre and the Cyril Clark public library. There is also the Jim Archdekin Recreation Centre on Conestoga. There are a plethora of schools in this neighbourhood including Heart Lake Secondary School and Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School that offers the popular International Baccalaureate program. Highway 410 forms the eastern boundary of the neighbourhood, providing a convenient transportation corridor for commuters.
Lifestyle:
Heart Lake Town Centre located at the intersection of Kennedy Road and Sandalwood Parkway East is anchored by a Metro grocery store and a Shoppers Drug Mart. There is a Lowe’s home improvement store at 10111 Heart Lake Road.
Homes:
The Villages of Heart Lake centred at Kennedy Road and Sandalwood Parkway East contains the largest number of homes in the neighbourhood. These homes were built in the 1970s and 80s. For the most part these are starter homes both detached and semi-detached. The exteriors are brick combined with frame siding on the second storey. The siding colour on many of the homes varies creating a colourful streetscape.
The second phase of development in this neighbourhood took place in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These homes have brick and stone exteriors. The detached homes have double car garages and the semi-detached homes have a single car garage. There is a nice mix of semi-detached and detached homes. Houses typically range in size from 1800 to 3200 square feet. Lot frontages are spacious ranging in size from 35 to 45 feet. Streetscapes include ravine lots and cul-de-sacs.
There are larger homes on premium size lots in the area around Conservation Park Drive. This enclave of homes includes ranch-style bungalows and Tudor Revival houses built in the 1970s and 80s.
Recreation:
Heart Lake Conservation Park is an outdoor enthusiast dream. There are a myriad of activities to partake in including the Wild Wetland Splash Pad and Pool featuring over 30 themed water features. There is also Treetop Trekking high up in the forest canopy with ten zip lines including twin 1,000 foot zip lines that cross right over Heart Lake. There is also a fitness trail that includes four outdoor fitness stations for a total workout. This is a great spot for a cross country run and pets are permitted on the trail provided they are on a leash. Heart Lake Conservation Park is also an ideal place for a family picnic or hike. And you can also fish in the lake as well as sign up for a boat rental.
Jim Archdekin Recreation Centre located at 292 Conestoga Drive has a pool, ice rink, 3 squash courts and an auditorium. Outdoor amenities include tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a skate park and a playground. Loafer’s Lake Recreation Centre has an indoor pool, fitness centre and auditorium. Outdoor amenities include a walking trail around the lake, an outdoor fitness equipment trail, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and a playground.
Turnery Golf Club located at 10100 Heart Lake Road is a public course with numerous ponds, bunkers and fairways. The grand finale on the 18th hole is a challenging par 4, 392 yards. If you hit a nice drive off this tee you can end your day with a bang and celebrate with a nice meal at restaurant NINE18.
Arts:
Cyril Clark Public Library is situated at the Loafer’s Lake Recreation Centre. Arts based programs are offered at this library.
