Sutton
History:
Sutton has always been the prominent village in Georgina dating back to the early 1800s. It was originally named Bourchier’s Mills after its founder Captain James O’Brien Bourchier who established a complex of mills and factories on the banks of the Black River. Bourchier was also the village’s first postmaster. Bourchier died in 1872 at the age of 75. In 1885 the name of the village post office was changed to Sutton West which eventually became known simply as Sutton. The Sutton name is thought to have originated with Major William K. Raines who built a stately residence in nearby Sibbalds Point that assumed a number of names including Sutton Lodge, a nod to Raines ancestral home in Wales.
