Jennings Gate
History:
Jennings Gate derives its name from a pioneer farmer named Henry Jennings who emigrated to Markham Jennings from Yorkshire, England in the 1840s. Jenning’s made a name for himself as a cattle breeder. He was also heavily involved in the Markham Agricultural Society which operated the annual Markham Fair. Jennings was named President of the Markham Fair in 1864.
The present day neighbourhood was developed in the early 1980s as an enclave of estate homes.
Overview:
Jennings Gate is an established neighbourhood located in the northwest section of Markham. This affluent enclave features very large homes on massive lots. This neighbourhood is surrounded by greenspace with lots of tall trees. The roads wind and twist and the topography is somewhat hilly making for a very pretty streetscape. There are no sidewalks so you do not see alot of people out on the street. If you are looking for a quiet and understated yet posh neighbourhood, then Jennings Gate may be for you.
Homes:
The houses in Jennings Gate are all well set back from the street with entrances off very long and narrow driveways. Stone or brick pillars at the front of the driveway are the norm for almost every house. Some of these markers are quite grand and ornate, others more simple. The original housing stock is consists mostly of Neo-Colonial style homes with grand front pillars. There are also a number of ranch style bungalows. Over time the older homes are being torn down and replaced with larger and more opulent houses that look perfectly at home on Jennings Gate’s oversize lots.
Arts:
The Markham Arts Council supports over 80 organizations and 850 individuals for a total of over 2000 members living and working throughout York Region and Ontario. You don’t have to be an artist to become a member. This organization welcomes people of all ages and all walks of life to join and take part in all the wonderful events, initiatives and activities that the Markham Arts Council has to offer.
