Victoria Square
History:
Victoria Square was formerly known as Read’s Corners. Thomas and Ann Read were prominent landowners in the area. Thomas Read was a founding member and patron of the Victoria Square Wesleyan Methodist Church. When the Victoria Square post office opened in 1854 the community has henceforth been known as community square. The Nichols family were the last farmers to operate in Victoria Square. They sold their farm to the developers of the present day neighbourhood in 1965 but continued to farm right up until 1974. The Nichols had two residences on their farm. These were thoughtfully preserved and restored by the developers who integrated them as residences into Read’s Park where they maintain a prominent position within the community, surrounded by new homes.
Overview:
Victoria Square is a combination of both old and new. It takes its cue from the historic Victoria Square hamlet clustered around Victoria Square Blvd., and Elgin Mills Road which has been in existence in some shape or form since the early 1800s. This neighbourhood is comprised of the area just a little to the east and the west of Woodbine Avenue and to the north and south of Elgin Mills Road. . The new residential development in the area has been careful to preserve the old village charm with heritage inspired architecture.
Homes:
The north part of Victoria Square, north of the church, closer to Elgin Mills features approximately 40 heritage homes. The new section of the neighbourhood south of the church showcases large detached brick and or stone houses with heritage inspired architecture. These homes have double or triple car garages.
Recreation:
Victoria Square Community Centre located at 2929 Elgin Mills Rd E, hosts a number of community events and is a popular picnic area. To the south and adjacent to the community centre is Victoria Square Park. The two baseball diamonds in the park are well used. There is also a terrific walking and cycling trail, sports fields and a childrens playground.
Arts:
The Markham Arts Council supports over 80 organizations and 850 individuals for a total of over 2000 members living and working throughout York Region and Ontario. You don’t have to be an artist to become a member. This organization welcomes people of all ages and all walks of life to join and take part in all the wonderful events, initiatives and activities that the Markham Arts Council has to offer.
