Glenway Estates
History:
The first settler to make a name for himself in this area was Dr. John Dawson who arrived here in the 1830s. His Georgian style brick manor stood on the west side of Yonge Street. In addition to being one of the first doctors in York County, Dawson was appointed a Justice of the Peace and performed marriages and other legal duties. Dawson’s descendants continued to own large acreages of land in this area right up until the 1990s
The present day Glenway Estates neighbourhood was developed in the 1980s. It included the former Glenway Golf and Country Club which was sold to developers in 2009 and remained open until 2011. It has since been redeveloped into a collection of new homes.
Overview:
Glenway Estates is centrally located off Yonge Street. This neighbourhood enjoys convenient access to shopping, transit and a variety of schools making it an excellent choice for families. Neighbourhood landmarks include Upper Canada Mall, York Region Administrative Centre, Newmarket courthouse, the historic Quakers Meeting House and the Ray Twinney Recreational Complex. The Newmarket Bus Terminal located at 320 Eagle Street just south of Davis Drive provides commuters with many options on the Go Transit, York Transit and Viva Transit Lines.
Lifestyle:
Upper Canada Mall located on the northwest corner of Yonge Street and Davis Drive is a regional shopping centre and a community hub. There are over 100 stores at this indoor shopping centre anchored by Hudson’s Bay. The mix of shops includes athletic and sporting goods, beauty and health, hone furnishings, footwear and fashion, gift stores, and a food court.
Homes:
Glenway Estates offers a wide range of housing options from modest two-storey houses built in the 1960s and 70s, to recently built two and three storey townhomes and spacious bungalows on 50 foot lots. New home developments including detached homes and townhomes have recently sprung up in the west section of the neighbourhood near Bathurst Street.
Recreation:
The Ray Twinney Recreation Complex is a popular recreation facility and neighbourhood hub that features two ice arenas, a large indoor pool, all with spectator seating, and change room facilities. The complex is also home of the ​​​Newmarket Stingrays, a top rated competitive swim club. Several lounges and rooms are available for rental for banquets, parties and meetings, and throughout the year a number of seasonal and high profile special events take place at the complex.
The Ray Twinney Recreation Complex is surrounded by a football field, a number of soccer pitches and baseball diamonds. Summer weekends are filled with both competitive and friendly tournaments.
