Woodland Hill
History:
Timothy Rogers a prominent Quaker from Vermont first explored this area in 1800. He was so enamored by what he saw that one year later in 1801 he would lead 40 Quaker families back to York County where they were each granted 200 acres of land in return for establishing a working homestead on their properties, as well as helping to build roads, principally Yonge Street. Rogers family members and friends would stay in this area which was originally part of King Township but Timothy Rogers would go on to establish Quaker settlements in Uxbridge and Pickering where he would ultimately settle. Rogers descendants would go on to found Rogers Communications Inc one of the largest and most successful companies in Canada.
The area now known as Woodland Hills was part of King Township until 1971 when the new Region of York was formed and Newmarket’s boundaries were expanded to include this area. Woodland Hills would remain rural until the late 1990s and 2000s when the first residential development took place. This community is still under development.
