Mill Pond
History:
Mill Pond is a kettle lake formed during the last ice age. Mill Pond was the energy source used to propel the burgeoning industry that sprung up around it in the early 1800s including: saw mills, iron foundries, a tannery, a brick yard, a distillery, lumber mills and a grist mill. At one time the Mill Pond was a popular swimming hole. It later became a drinking water reservoir. Today, Mill Pond serves as a community hub that includes a myriad of events and activities for the entire community to enjoy.
Overview:
What a wonderful discovery. There really is a Mill Pond and it is located right in the centre of this neighbourhood on Mill Street between Yonge Street and Bathurst Street. Mill Pond is the focal point of this popular family oriented neighbourhood. Mill Pond is also the venue for many annual neighbourhood events including: Art Walk, and the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival. Splash held the first Sunday in June, at the Mill Pond, brings the entire community together in a festival like atmosphere to celebrate the local environment and conservation areas that are such a big part of Richmond Hill.The Mill Pond neighbourhood enjoys the advantage of being situated off Yonge Street in the heart of downtown Richmond Hill. As a result local residents enjoy easy access to Richmond Hill landmarks including: The Richmond Hill Centre for The Performing Arts, The Wave Pool and Richmond Hill Central Public Library. Other local landmarks include the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital on Trench Street, and the Mill Pond Gallery on Mill Street.
Lifestyle:
There are a handful of curio shops on Mill Street including the Mill Pond Art Gallery. A plethora of local shopping and restaurants are easily accessible along Yonge Street in Richmond Hill’s historic downtown district.
Homes:
There are really three pockets of homes in the Mill Pond neighbourhood; all with their own distinct housing styles. The enclave closest to Yonge Street is filled with mostly heritage homes. There are also groups of townhomes and randomly placed apartment buildings scattered throughout this part of the neighbourhood. The area around Mill Pond, north and south of Mill Street features bungalows, split-level and detached Colonial-Revival style houses all on generous size lots. West towards Bathurst Street is the Heritage Estates subdivision. This enclave features one of the finest collections of Georgian-Revival style houses in the Greater Toronto Area.
Recreation:
The actual Mill Pond that stretches north along Mill Street is enjoyed year round by residents of this community. In the summertime the walking trails and paths are perfect for a leisurely stroll. This park is the site of the Mill Pond Splash an annual event celebrating Richmond Hill’s natural heritage. Concerts and barbecues are also held at Mill Pond in the summertime. In winter Mill Pond Park hosts the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival highlighted by a pancake breakfast. Ice skating on the pond is a popular pastime.
Arts:
The Mill Pond Gallery located at 314 Mill Street is directly across the street from the actual Mill Pond. This facility is the home of the Richmond Hill Group of Artists that offers classes, gallery shows, open studio time, as well as artists demonstrations.
