North Leslie
History:
A ancient landform known as the Oak Ridges Moraine, a remnant of the last ice age some 12,000 years ago has historically defined this area. In 2010 Richmond Hill gave developers the green light to develop the North Leslie neighbourhood with provisions to protect the environmentally sensitive lands situated within this neighbourhood.
Overview:
North Leslie is Richmond Hill’s newest neighbourhood. Situated along the Oak Ridges Moraine corridor North Leslie is traversed by three major tributaries of the Rouge River and includes significant wetlands and woodlots. This neighbourhood is still largely rural but municipal infrastructure is currently taking place as a limited amount of new housing development with an “Environment First” guiding principle is anticipated. The major landmark in this neighbourhood is Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park located at 1300 Elgin Mills Road East. Richmond Green is the largest park in Richmond Hill and includes a 26,000 square foot indoor sports centre, an outdoor amphitheatre, sports fields, hockey rinks and outdoor skating trails.
Lifestyle:
Elgin Mills Crossing situated on the northeast corner of Leslie Street and Elgin Mills Road is a huge open air shopping destination anchored by The Home Depot, Staples and Costco. This shopping complex is comprised mostly of national franchise retailers and fast food restaurants. There are is also a professional and medical building that is part of this complex.
Homes:
North Leslie has a curvi-linear streetscape lined with elegant cast iron street lamps. The houses are large in scale featuring both detached houses and semi-detached houses that look like they are detached at first glance. The architecture features a variety of designs from the traditional Georgian style to more contemporary style homes. There is a nice variety of exteriors including a myriad of brick colours, patterned stonework, stucco and precast stone. This is not a cookie cutter subdivision. Most of the house exteriors include a combination of the aforementioned materials creating some lively and unique designs. The semi-detached homes have built-in single car garages and the detached homes have built-in 2 car garages.
Recreation:
Richmond Green Sports Centre and park located at 1300 Elgin Mills Rd E, holds the distinction of being the largest park in Richmond Hill. This multi-purpose facility includes a 26,000 sq. ft. indoor recreation centre and an arena with two ice rinks. The expansive grounds are comprised of sports fields, a skateboard park, an inline skating trail, splash pad, baseball diamonds, a basketball court, walking trails and picnic areas. In the winter park visitors can enjoy an outdoor skating trail.
Arts:
Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park is the home of Boynton House, an art exhibition space with four display rooms that are fitted for art shows. Boynton House hosts a variety of events throughout the year including craft shows, art exhibitions and sales, and outdoor art in the garden exhibitions.Richmond Green Public Library located at 1 William F. Bell Pkwy is connected to Richmond Green Secondary School. This library offers myriad of programs for all ages.
